Carbon negative
Many tons of carbon are sequestered from the atmosphere each year by the thousands of native trees we have planted over 35 years. Many more are to be planted each year.
Our carbon negative status comes from much investment in green technologies. A 199 kW district biomass system heats the barn & surrounding buildings.
Electricity is provided by a 90 kW array of solar panels screened by hedges. This solar array sends most of it’s electricity back to the National Grid.

Why Chaucer?
The name of Chaucer has stayed with the estate here, for the last 625 years. The estate was owned by Geoffrey Chaucer’s son Thomas famous in his own rite as the longest serving speaker in the House of Commons, a record which stood until the 18th century.
Centre of the estate then was Gresham Castle. The moated ruins can still be explored and are just a short walk from Chaucer Barn. The castle (a fortified Manor house) was made famous in the Paston Letters, one of the most important historical documents from the middle ages.
